Right Corner Workstation Q & A
What is a cheap wood that is also pretty?
I'm in high school and in wood shop and we have to buy our own wood. I'm going to make a corner desk/computer workstation/shoe rack/mini fridge holder all in one but I'm looking for the right wood. I love the color of walnut but it's so expensive. What wood(s) can I get that look good but are cheap? I find pine and oak to be rather plain.
Remember, you can stain most wood to get the color you desire--it's the grain your looking for. On the cheap, Hemlock or Larch(in the pine family) has a lot of grain, and is relatively cheap and easier to work with then a hard-wood. Have you looked into "rustic" styling? Rustic red oak is somewhat cheap, and is full of black spots and knot holes.
Sorry i've suggested 2 that you said you may not be interested in, but these are what i have had the most experience with that i would consider cheap. Possibly the rustic idea may work or check out the hemlock or larch, they're not at all like most pines.
EDIT: Ran out of time to finish----your best bet is to go to your nearest wood dealer, with a cost and material list in mind, and then look at your options, they (prices and availability) may vary based on where your at. Good luck and have fun building it. I still cherish my first build,a (TV stand /entertainment center equipped with 65 cd storage drawer and several component racks including a hinged smoked glass top for access to my turn-table...I may have dated myself there ha-ha..)
